Slightly Stoopid

While it’s a rare commodity for a band to tour as consistently as Slightly Stoopid, the group’s diligent commitment to live music provides some insight into their loyal fan base and unique creative metamorphosis throughout their existence. Though it's been a couple of years since the release of their last studio album, Top Of The World (August 14, 2012), the Ocean Beach, California-based group—led by co-founders and multi-instrumentalists Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty—have also found the same passionate dedication to their studio craft, holing up between tours in their own San Diego recording studio and record label complex. The balance of a prolific touring regimen between albums have helped to refine the tasty fusion and massive groove that permeates Stoopid’s trademark sound and seven album catalogue, as well as their live shows.

"We're a touring act, and we've been on the road pretty much non-stop over the last decade," explains Doughty, offering that the more recent creation of the band's own local recording studio and rehearsal clubhouse (within the warehouse district of Mission Valley just inland of Ocean Beach) certainly aided and influenced their last release Top of the World, and has inspired their latest sessions, which the band anticipates could stretch into a few different recording projects.

"Over the last 5 years we started our own studio and within the last 9 months, anticipating the window for new album sessions, the band has invested into innovations and equipment upgrades for the studio in a quest to capture and progress our signature sound forward. Having our own studio really enables us to make records at our own pace and to make the right records, hopefully (with a grin) at various stages of our career,” Doughty continues. “What's nice about having our own environment to record in and analyze the music is it really lets you keep an organic feel. For us, I feel like it's a step into the next level, as far as understanding the process of recording, understanding the process of songwriting. We took everything that we've learned over the years and really put it into this place and into our music.” The property also houses the creative loft space that has become the official offices of the band’s own label Stoopid Records, which issued the band’s second album in 1999 Acoustic Roots, and has continued to be their preferred method of distributing the band’s recorded material.

Another key ingredient to what makes Slightly Stoopid extraordinarily special is the inclusion of several musical guests, both live and in the studio. "It really keeps that 'family atmosphere' for us,” says Doughty. “I think it really shows in the music — we live for the spirit of collaboration and on Top of The World we had G. Love, Angelo Moore from Fishbone, Don Carlos, Barrington Levy, Ian Neville from Dumpstaphunk, Tory Ruffin from Morris Day and the Time and Fishbone, and singer/songwriter Angela Hunte. Angelo Moore to me is one of the greatest front-men to ever step foot on a stage. As a fan and out of respect, I try to do something with Angelo every time we have a record, really. If you listen to his lyrics, his vocal performance—I don't know who could keep up with Angelo on stage. Don Carlos from Black Uhuru is one of the legendary reggae singers of all time and we've had the pleasure of working with him the last few years. We've been friends with G. Love for over 15 years, and we've been able to work together quite a few different times in the studio. It seems like second nature. Whenever you're recording with G., it's almost like you're really just hanging out with your bro and you happen to hit record. We've done so many shows together and so many studio sessions, it becomes second nature.“

Besides recording at their own studio, Slightly Stoopid have always been extremely hands-on when it comes to their career, going back more than a decade to when they founded their own record label, Stoopid Records.

"We started Stoopid Records around 1999,” Doughty clarifies. “At that time, we were in transition as far as what we were doing with our records, and we thought it would be good to have our own independent label—like Sublime showed us back in the day with Skunk Records. What's nice is we've had a following with the fans, where people understand that Stoopid Records is Slightly Stoopid and other bands we want to help break out."

"For us, it was a big turning point as far as having complete creative control over everything we do. That's something big for this band—we want to make the music for ourselves and for our fans. We don't really make music for someone in an office that tells us something needs to be there. We've always had a very organic, do-it-yourself attitude. I think it's paid off in dividends."

In addition to 2012’s Top of the World, Slightly Stoopid also released the live in-studio CD/DVD Slightly Stoopid & Friends – Live At Roberto’s, recorded with Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir at his state-of–the-art TRI Studios in San Rafael, CA. The 32-song session included 2 sets (acoustic & electric), guest spots from Ivan Neville and Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Karl Denson, Don Carlos of Black Uhuru, and Bob Weir himself! The release also boasts a candid interview of the band conducted by Weir and comedian Tommy Chong who MC’d the sessions and provided spiritual “Wisdom”! The rock n’ roll gods smiled here and PALLADIA picked it up as an hour special which 2 years later is still in the channel’s rotation.

Slightly Stoopid’s current line-up for the upcoming “Summer Sessions 2014” tour consists of Miles Doughty (guitar, bass, vocals) and Kyle McDonald (guitar, bass, vocals) along with Ryan “Rymo” Moran (drums), Oguer “OG” Ocon (congas, percussion, harp, vocals), newcomer Andy Geib (trumpet), Daniel “Dela” Delacruz (saxophone) and Paul Wolstencroft (keyboards). Additionally, “unofficial 8th member” Karl Denson of Greyboy Allstars, who’s been touring with the band over the last few years and lent his saxophone talents throughout Top of the World, is joining the band on tour again this summer.

Nearly two decades into their artistry, Slightly Stoopid continues to progress into new musical territory, defining their signature sound while creating a contagious feel-good vibe that has its own lifestyle and subculture…and it’s been done entirely on their own terms.

Stick Figure

Launched in Duxbury, Massachusetts, Stick Figure showcases the talents of multi-instrumentalist and producer Scott Woodruff. Stick Figure’s music has a unique style that creatively blends upbeat roots reggae with the reverberating echoes of dub. Often referred to as the “one man band,” Scott single-handedly created 4 full length albums from 2006-2012 (a fifth album, “Reprise Sessions,” was recorded with a full band and released in 2010), and has sold over 50,000 albums worldwide. Each of Stick Figure’s songs are created by recording instruments individually, layering tracks on top of one another in unison.

During the summer of 2009, Scott moved from East to West Coast, laying down roots in California, where he currently resides. In June of 2012, he released his most recent album, “Burial Ground,” arguably Stick Figure’s most extraordinary work to date. After hitting #1 on both iTunes and Billboard Reggae charts, Scott decided to bring the music to the people, putting together a live band and heading out on the road. The current lineup adds the creative, musical talents of Kevin Bong (Keyboards), Kevin Offitzer (Drums) and Tommy Suliman (Bass).

In the Fall of 2012, Stick Figure embarked on their first ever tour, linking up with The Green and performing 18 shows along the East Coast. Their debut tour ignited flames under both the band and dedicated fans who’ve been patiently waiting to hear Stick Figure’s music live. Pepper

Ohana: The Hawaiian word for family, which is used to convey the sense of togetherness that transcends blood ties.

For Pepper paying homage to their roots is essential over a decade in to their celebrated career. The Southern California trio, who formed in 1997 and moved to the mainland from the three musicians’ hometown of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in 1999, know that where they come from should always be infused in the music they create. On Ohana, the group’s seventh full-length album (4/29/16, LAW Records), Pepper embraces the feelings and sounds that encouraged them to become a band in the first place.

 

“Over our past few albums, we had been departing from our original sound and exploring new directions,” Bret notes. “On this album, we wanted to come back to our classic style and revisit our roots. The writing and recording process was a conscious effort to do that.”

 

“We wanted to strip the band down to its natural state,” Kaleo adds. “We’ve always been a three-piece band with good songs and energy and our goal was to showcase that. We’re all were really pleased with how the music came out and how it conveys the strengths of our band.”

 

It was important to the musicians to self-produce Ohana, which marks the first time Pepper has helmed the production of one of their albums. From their 2000 debut Give’n It to their 2006 standout album No Shame, which was recorded with 311’s Nick Hexum, No Doubt’s Tony Kanal and Butthole Surfers’ Paul Leary, Pepper has explored various methods of recording, always hoping to embody not only their signature style of music but their lifestyle in the songs. Ohana was recorded last fall in the band’s own Kona Inn Recording Studio in Redondo Beach. The building is the former home of Pennywise’s Stall #2 studio and embodies a positive vibe for Pepper, who have recently begun recording other artists in the space.

 

“It was time for us to take the reins,” Bret says. “We’ve been through the process with several really cool producers in the past and we’ve learned a lot from them. We have the knowledge now and it’s about not being complacent anymore. We wanted to do it ourselves, so it’s from our family to yours.”

 

“I really wanted to simplify everything and not overthink things,” Yesod adds. “We wanted to go jam in a room and hit record. I think we found a great balance in the studio and the end result was pure Pepper, condensed down to its purest form. It was really gratifying to be in control of the process from start to finish and know that we created every aspect of the album.”

 

 

The resulting album features Pepper’s surf rock songs, showcasing the upbeat, positive vibe elements that make the band so beloved by their fans. There is, as usual, an ever-present sense of sunshine throughout the tracks, bolstering the music’s sense of optimism. The party anthems, the beach hang melodies, the boisterous rhythms are all there, each song carefully crafted to best express sunny moments by the ocean. “Vacation,” a fun, upbeat reggae-tinged number, was co-written by Bret and production duo Diji Parq and seems, to the band, like “the Beach Boys at their goofiest.” The soulful “Never Ending Summer” is about taking full advantage of something before it ends while “Wait” evolved throughout the writing process and eventually became a propulsive crooner that feels like signature Pepper.

 

“Every song on this album is a great example of what we wanted to do,” Kaleo says. “That’s why there are only ten of them. We wanted to give the music our concentrated, focused attention. It’s not about the singles, but about being a whole piece. That’s why we gave it the most powerful name we know.”

 

“Growing up in Hawaii your Ohana defines you,” Yesod says. “It is you. And it's not just family through blood – it's family through spirithood, brotherhood and sisterhood. Ohana is truly the strongest bond that can ever be made. It’s how we feel about each other as friends and as a band, and we wanted that spirit to come through in the music itself. These songs come together to create their own version of Ohana.”

 

Over the years, Pepper have toured extensively with groups like 311, Slightly Stoopid, Flogging Molly and Sublime With Rome, and spent several summers on Warped Tour – and this live sensibility shows on the album, released on the group’s own LAW Records. The band’s music – both live and on their releases – is really about enjoying life and being grateful for each experience. They want to give their all to every performance and share their passion with their fans and with younger artists.

 

“We’re still growing a lot,” Bret says. “Our live show continues to improve and evolve and we always give it our all onstage. We have so much fun playing, even all these years later. And we’ve gotten to work and tour with so many different artists. We’ve learned a lot from them. Everything we do is done from love. We feel good to all be sitting at a table, laughing, twenty years later. It’s the three of us, just like when we were kids. Because we were together long before we were a band and we’re still such good friends. We can’t stop doing this and we don’t want to ever stop enjoying it.”
